Terror of flyover collapse in Tripura prevails high after the sudden collapse of under construction flyover at Kolkata : crippled road at Battala gives high panic to the common people

AGARTALA, April 2 (TIWN): Just before people could recover from the shock of flyover collapse at Kolkata, panic and terror ran high among the people here after witnessing a crippled road at Battala in the flyover construction site which can lead to major accidents at any moment. It is to be mentioned here that fear gripped people when the road at Battala connecting server other routes collapsed blocking the traffic movement. The common public on Friday alleged slow progress in the construction work of the fly-over at Battala junction. Talking to TIWN correspondent on Friday, the public at battala alleged that the construction work is undergoing in slow progress and there is no development in the site. The localities also said that, comparing to the prior days the work progress has slowed down after the collection of the sample for the soil test. However, agitating over the slow progress in the construction work of the first ever fly over the locals also complained that due to the delay in the construction site at Battala the people faces traffic congestion at the office hours and cannot reach to their destination.

The locals further complained that if the construction goes on in a such a slow progress the construction work for the flyover will not be completed within the given time period.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar earlier this year laying the foundation stone pitched to complete the construction work of the first ever flyover in Tripura by 30 months, but the progress in the work may delay the completion of the work. One of the leading construction company Nagarjun is entrusted with the construction of Rs. 250 crore sanctioned project work of building fly over which would first of its kind here in the state, alleged localite.

It is  to be mentioned her that at least 21 people were killed and more than 60 injured as two parts of an under-construction 2.2-km-long Vivekananda Flyover collapsed in a congested market area in BurraBazar, north Kolkata, on Thursday afternoon.

A 100-metre (330-ft) section came crashing down suddenly on a crowded street around lunchtime, crushing pedestrians, cars and other vehicles under huge concrete slabs and metal. The death toll is likely to increase as scores of people inside vehicles were trapped under the collapsed bridge.

K.P. Rao, a representative of the Hyderabad-based construction company IVRCL, which was contracted to build the giant flyover, called the disaster an “act of God”, while an FIR has been lodged against the local officials of the company.

The flyover is located at the hub of the wholesale market for spices, garments and plastics, BurraBazar, and the livelihoods of thousands who reside in the area, are linked with the market.
