AGARTALA, March 25 (TIWN): Along with the world, Christians across the state on Friday commemorated the day of Good Friday with reflection of their transgressions and renewal of their faith. It is the day Jesus Christ was crucified and hence the day is observed as Good Friday.

The day was observed with traditional solemnity across the state on Friday. The devotees on Friday walked up to the nearest church offered prayers to lord Jesus for peace and prosperity. The occasion was observed in all churches of the state including Mariam Nagar Church, Don Bosco church, Holy cross church and others.

Christians observed fasts, and went through the process of penance and reconciliation, to symbolically cleanse themselves as they prepare for Christ's resurrection and the birth symbolically of a new life that is worthy of Christ's heavenly role as their master and Lord.

Good Friday, which falls on March 25 this year, commemorates the painful crucifixion of Jesus Christ. From earliest times it was a day of mourning. The church ceremonies on this day include reading of the Passion of Christ, reciting a string of prayers, unveiling and veneration of the Cross and communion service. The day’s celebrations are held in the afternoon. Since only one service is held on this day, to accommodate the bunched-up congregation, the celebrations are generally held outdoors. In cosmopolitan cities like Mumbai, non-Christians also attend the Holy Week ceremonies noted for their piety and somber dignity.

The Way of the Cross is enacted in the churches, depicting the events surrounding the fructification of Jesus Christ. The devotees carry statues of Jesus and Mother Mary.Good Friday is a Christian religious holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The holiday is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday proceeding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday or Easter Friday, though the last term properly refers to the Friday in Easter week.
