Lone Rajya Sabha candidate Jharna Das Baidya files nomination

AGARTALA, March 9 (TIWN): Lone Rajya Sabha candidate from Tripura Jharna Das Baidya on Wednesday filed nomination to Assembly returning officer Bamdev Majumder at the secretariat building.

Ruling CPI-M once again in Tripura field Jharna Das Baidya, the sitting MP as its candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state. 

The decision was taken at a meeting of the state committee of the party. 

This is the second term for Das Baidya, who is a prominent woman leader of the state. 

The election would be held on March 21 in the premises of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. 

The Left Front has 50 of the total 60 seats in the Assembly.

However, it is to be mentioned here that Elections to a total of 13 Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Punjab would be held on March 21. Officials said the President of India and the Central Election Commission have issued separate notifications for these elections.

The CPI-M state committee meeting took the final decision. 

The election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat comes as Baidya's six year term ends on April 2.

Jharna Das Baidya's name was selected unanimously for the Rajya Sabha elections in the CPI-M state committee meeting.

Before being elected to upper house of parliament, Baidya had served as the chairperson of the State Social Welfare Board. The 53-year-old woman leader belongs to the Scheduled Caste community.
