Tripura's educational scenario in doldrums : lameduck Chief Minister silent, Education Minister clueless

AGARTALA, March 2 (TIWN): Despite tall claims made by the Left Front Government of Tripura pertaining to the educational scenario of the state, the ground reality tells a different tale. The educated youth hates to join teaching service as because eligibility requirements for a teacher’s job is not adhered by the State Government. This has resulted in huge amount of teacher’s crisis. Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas are the worst sufferers in this point. Teachers in the state were scared to go to school when the law and order situation was appalling in the remotest corners. The recalcitrant State Government never acted upon it and thus, the situation still remains the same. Meanwhile, huge number of teachers have been superannuated. However, the State Government never contemplated filling up the vacuum created by those superannuated lot. The terms and conditions of teacher’s recruitment have been amended throughout India by mandating appearance for Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET). As the State Government recruited 10,323 teacher’s without conducting TET, the Tripura High Court declared the appointments null and void. Challenging this verdict, the State Government moved the Supreme Court. The case is still pending before the apex Court. If the apex Court stands by the High Court, 10, 323 teachers would surely lose their jobs.

As per the Department of Education, Government of Tripura is concerned, 2,355 teacher’s posts are vacant in Primary Schools. In Senior-Basic Schools, 1,941 teacher’s posts are vacant. 2,473 teacher’s posts are vacant in High Schools. More than 1,500 teacher’s posts are vacant in Higher Secondary Schools.

Only 35 candidates have emerged eligible in the first ever held TET exams at the primary level in Tripura.

This is a result of the State Government’s Department of Education’s disrespect towards law and also penchant for sycophancy towards the Left Front at the party level.

This bears testimony to the fact that, meanwhile, the Tripura High Court has declared the selection of 113 assistant professors null and void by sternly reprimanding Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC).

“If TPSC misguides the Court next time and files a false affidavit, it would sternly crack down upon TPSC,” the High Court stated in its verdict yesterday.

To resolve this issue, the State Government is intending to appoint retired teachers on a contractual basis. If the Government is able to do this, they wouldn’t have to pay DAs, pensions and other benefits as in case of regular employees.
