VC Poll violence continue: Unruly IPFT supporters gheroued Lefunga police station, demands to release the arrested IPFT supporters

AGARTALA, March 1 (TIWN): Raising voice against Lefunga Police station the IPFT supporters on Tuesday gheroued the police station and demanded to release the arrested IPFT supporters.

There was report of violence on the day of counting of VC election between CPM and IPFT workers at a counting hall under the Lefunga development block in northern Agartala. At least two persons were injured and extra security was deployed to ease tensions.

However demanding to release the IPFT supporters from jail, the IPFT workers has gheroued Lefunga police station on Tuesday morning.

Reportedly, there was violence in several block areas during counting of votes. In Dashda block CRPF, TSR and police also made indiscriminate firing in the air to disperse IPFT and BJP workers who tried to storm into the counting hall. Counting was stopped for more than two hours here. Later SP North Tripura rushed to the spot with reinforcements and brought the situation under control and counting restarted.

In Damchara too there was violence and police had tough time to control the IPFT workers. In Lefunga trouble started even before counting started and ruling party cadres won by beating up several IPFT workers. This demoralized the morale of not only the IPFT but also the INPT workers.

On the day of the re-polling, violence was reported from many places after clash was reported between IPFT and CPI-M supporters.  North Tripura was hit with the election violence after clash broke out between IPFT and CPI-M  after IPFT stated that they were suppose to win all the seats to the election.

Tripura’s ruling Left Front led by the Communist Party of India-Marxist on Sunday swept the Village Committee (VC) polls, winning 520 of the 587 committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

Polling was held in 528 of the 587 VCs. The ruling Left Front parties have been elected unopposed in 59 VCs; so elections were held for 3,695 seats of 528 VCs. The IPFT, INPT and TPP are all local tribal-based parties.
