AGARTALA, Feb 28 (TIWN): After registering a clean victory in urban local body elections in the state in December last, the Left Front in Tripura has made a landslide victory into another electoral battle. Election to the village committees under Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) held on February 24 in total 3695 seats is captured most by the CPI-M.

According to the latest results after re-counting, CPI-M stands at top position with a total of 2905 seats under their power.

Despite of allegations raised by opposition regarding vote rigging and discrepancy in counting CPI-M has bagged their position in the top in the village committee election.

There was report of violence between CPM and IPFT workers at a counting hall under the Lefunga development block in northern Agartala. At least two persons were injured and extra security was deployed to ease tensions.

The ruling Left Front won 59 VCs unopposed in the election that recorded a turnout of more than 85%. As many as 8,194 candidates of various national and local parties contested the polls and half of those numbers are women.

The Left Front put up 3,695 candidates, followed by IPFT (1,734), BJP (983), INPT (782) and Congress (601). A total of 645,840 people, including 318,909 women, cast their vote.

The tribal council area is formed with two-thirds of the state territory and is home to tribal people, who form one-third of the state's population. The village committees are equivalent to village panchayat committees.

Meanwhile, the ruling CPI-M, the major partner of the Left Front, in a statement congratulated the people for the massive victory.

Around 85 per cent turnout was recorded in the TTAADC poll to constitute village committees. Election was held in 528 of the 587 village committees as Left parties were elected unopposed in 59 of them.

Multi-layered security blanket was thrown over tribal dominated and interior areas of Tripura for the elections in 528 of the 587 village committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The state government has asked the Border Security Force (BSF) to maintain maximum vigil along the India-Bangladesh border to foil any intrusion attempt from across the border.

Polling was supposed to be held for 587 village committees in TTAADC areas but as the ruling Left parties have already won in 59 VCs; so elections is held for 3,695 seats of 528 VCs.
