CPI-M candidate Parimal Debnath of Amarpur assembly constituency to take oath on Thursday

AGARTALA, Feb 24 (TIWN): Newly elected CPI-M candidate Parimal Debnath to take oath as an MLA on Thursday at secretariat after he won from Amarpur assembly constituency.

CPI-M candidate Parimal Debnath defeated his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rival Ranjit Das by 10,597 votes. The CPI-M secured 20,355 votes, the BJP got 9,758 votes while Congress' Chanchal Dey bagged only 1,231 votes, securing fourth position.

The by-poll was held on February 13. The seat had fallen vacant following the resignation of the Manoranjan Acharjee from the Assembly on December 10 last after he was expelled from CPI (M) on charges of molestation.

Acharjee, who was elected in 2008 and again in 2013 from the constituency, has denied the charges. The CPI-M, however, expelled him on charges of wrongdoing.

Left front candidate Parimal Debnath made a clean sweep in the Amarpur bi-election with the highest margin.

Interestingly, left front never lost this seat since 1998 and is firmly gripping the position till date.

CPI-M candidate Parimal Debnath got 20,355 votes while BJP candidate Ranjit Das secured 9,751 votes. Congress candidate Chanchal Dey stood at third position with less than 4,000 votes.

As expected CPI-M candidate Parimal Debnath won the Amarpur by-elections by good margin. Debnath defeated the BJP candidate who stood in second position.

However, CPIM candidate secured 20,355 votes, BJP with 9751, IPFT with 1623, Amrabangali 149, independent party 216 where as 262 votes were given to the account of NOTA.

Seven candidates were in fray namely Parimal Debnath of CPI (M), Chanchal Dey from Congress, Ranjit Das from BJP, Pabitra Mohan Jamatia of IPFT, Bijoy Das from Amra Bangalee party, Nakshetra Jamatia from INPT and Ranajoy Jamatia of Twipra Land party.

The bi-election for the Amarpur Assembly segment was decided to hold after the CPI-M has kicked off its one MLA of Amarpur Assembly segment Manoranjan Acharjee on charge of moral error.    CPI-M legislator Manoranjan Acharjee has resigned from the Tripura assembly after the party expelled him on charges of wrongdoing.  Although, Acharjee has denied the charges slated against him.
