AGARTALA, Feb 10 (TIWN): On the occasion of annual sport meet of Henry Derozio School at Agartala, Arjuna Awardee Dipa Karmakar was felicitated as an icon of inspiration in field of sports in Tripura.

Indian artistic gymnast Dipa Karmakar, born 9 August 1993 in Agartala represents India at the international circuit. She came to recognition when she won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, held at Glasgow becoming the first Indian female gymnast to do so in the history of the games.

Eight different countries were represented by eight vaulters in the finals of the event at the Gymnastics World Championship.

Young Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar made history on October 25 becoming the first ever Indian to qualify for the finals of World Gymnastics Championships.

Besides, this year Tripura's golden girl Dipa Karmakar received prestigious Arjuna Award from President Pranab Mukherjee on National Sports Day, the birth anniversary of Hockey Wizard Dhyan Chand.

Gymnast Dipa Karmakar's achievement in Commonwealth Games as first Indian woman bronze medal winner is an inspiration to all young generation women athletes of India.

The 22-year-old Golden Girl from Agartala scored a total of 14.900 points in the women's Vault qualification at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow.

On the subsequent second vault, the Tsukahara 720, Dipa would twist alright but lose her way stepping out of the lane and be docked points immediately – a 0.3 penalty that would yield a lowly 14.066 (Difficulty 6.0), for an average of 14.683 and a fifth position in the world. It was 0.983 points off the gold, and 0.858 short of the bronze medal.
