Rs. 17cr MGNREGA scam: Negligence in investigation, BDO Bimal Chakraborty roams free

AGARTALA, Feb 3 (TIWN): Despite several initiatives taken against the scamster BDO Bimal Chakraborty, negligence in investigation letting the scamster to roam free. It is to be mentioned here that after passage of several months of scam came into limelight the main accused BDO Bimal Chakraborty is yet roaming free and police is reluctant to take any action. Though, a CBI inquiry was demanded into the alleged financial irregularity of Rs 17 crore in the Bishalgarh Block Development Office of Tripura in 2013. Besides, a PIL was filed against the Bishalgarh MGNREGA scam where FIR was lodged by Bishalgarh Block Development Officer (BDO) against 12 officials including former BDO of the block –Bimal Chakraborty. Though he was being arrested last year but at present he is roaming free as police could not file proper charge-sheet. It is to be mentioned here that altogether 39 charge sheets are filed so far and it also includes the kingpin Scamster BDO Bimal Chakraborty. Even after almost a year police couldn’t file charge sheet.

The "under table" relations of police and the political heads has successfully managed to hush up the massive scam. 

It is to be mentioned here that despite of several tall claims that the state is developing day by day, yet police fails to make proper investigation.

However, it is to be mentioned here that Bimal Chakraborty belongs to a powerful CPI-M family of the state and close to chief minister Manik Sarkar. His elder brother Amal Chakraborty is CPI-M youth wing DYFI’s Secretary.

Another elder brother Kamal Chakraborty is Commandant of Tripura State Rifles and eldest brother Shyamal Chakraborty is a Chemistry teacher in Calcutta University who is proposed to be Vice Chancellor of newly coming Tripura state university.

Earlier Opposition Congress had demanded to shift the trial of Bimal Chakraborty from Bishalgarh Judicial Magistrate Court as Bimal’s sister in-law and Kamal’s wife Susmita is working as PA of the Magistrate.

However, police had registered a case in this connection (case no. 135/14) under section 409 of IPC. The special audit report of MGNREGA for the financial year 2012-13 and FY 2013-14 had found misappropriation of more than Rs. 17 crores. The internal audit was done during 05/05/2014 to 30/06/2014.
