AGARTALA, Feb 2 (TIWN): Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee on Tuesday celebrated the completion of successful 10 years the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act at Muktadhara.
It is to be mentioned here that the rural job guarantee scheme was first announced by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in February 2006.
Reportedly, since the beginning, the expenditure on the programme has amounted to over Rupees three lakh crore. Out of this, 71 percent has been spent on wage payments to workers.
However, over 1,980 crore man-days have been generated in the programme.
To mark the celebration of the 10 years of completion of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee has paid tribute to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at Mukta Dhara.
Along with PCC President Birajit Sinha, MLA Ashish Saha, Oppsition leader Sudip Roy Barman and others were also present.
According to the reports, during the initial stage MGNREGA started in 200 districts of the country on September 7, 2005. Days by day it covered all over the country by 2008.
Around Rs 313,844.55 crore has been spent, of this 71 per cent has been spent on wage payments to workers since 2005.
In its World Development Report 2014, the World Bank termed it a "stellar example of rural development.
However, it has been mentioned that more than 65 per cent of the works linked to agriculture and allied activities.
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act is an Indian labour law and social security measure that aims to guarantee the right to work.
It aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
