AGARTALA, Jan 15 (TIWN): In order to ensure that all the children in the Gomati District would be administered the polio vaccine, the District Health Department had set up 461 centres.

According to the official reports, the first phase of the polio vaccine will be given on January 17 and the second phase of the vaccination will start from February 21.

However, to provide vaccination to 45, 579 children from 0 – 5 years of age, altogether 461centre will be opened.

It has been mentioned that to make the programme successful altogether 1844 co-ordinators and 92 supervisors will be deployed.

With the initiatives to eradicate the polio, World Health Assembly has launched pulse polio immunization programme.

The Government of India began a vaccination program to eradicate poliomyelitis (polio), in the country, by vaccinating all children under the age of five years against the polio virus in the year 1978. Children between the age group of 0-5 years were administered by the polio drops every year.

It is to be mentioned here that on February 24 of the year 2012, World Health Organization has removed the name of India from the list of the countries with active endemic wild polio virus transmission.

The project fights poliomyelitis through a large-scale pulse immunisation programme and monitoring for polio cases.

However, though India is now a polio-free country but yet to avoid any kind of untoward incident the people are being urged to immunize their children with polio vaccine.

Poliomyelitis, often called polio or infantile paralysis, is an acute viral infectious disease spread from person to person, primarily via the fecal-oral route. There is no cure for polio. The focus of modern treatment has been on providing relief of symptoms and preventing complications.
