State gears up to celebrate Makar Sankranti

AGARTALA, Jan 14 (TIWN): Along with the nation, Tripura has also geared up to celebrate the colourful harvest festival of Makar Sankranti on Friday.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated in different manners all across Nation. Where the Bengali families make sweets, ‘pitha’, Telugus burn old items of the house, Punjabis create a bon fire called ‘Lohri’.

The entire nation welcomes the new season of harvest in different way, but with a single notion of joy.

To mark the celebration, women decorate the house premises with colourful alpona.

This day is considered as one of the auspicious time of the year, and as it is to celebrate the harvest festival, the Bengalis make all sweets with rice.

People in Tripura celebrate the festival by offering Pithas and Til Ladoos to the Sun God and then distributing them to friends and family. 

Puli Pithe, Paatisapta, Maalpoaa, Narkel Nadu, Til Nadu are some of the most famous sweet dishes that mark Poush Parbon. Khejurer Gur or jaggery made from dates is the iconic item of the Poush Parbon.

Makar Sankranti is a blissful festival celebrated by Hindus.

Besides, a huge rush of consumers has been observed in all the small and big markets of the State. People are witnessed busy in buying sweets, ingredients for the pitha puli. Battala Market and Marajganj Bazaar was also witnessed with huge crowd of people buying sweets.

Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the sun into the zodiacal sign of Makara (Capricorn) on its celestial path.

The day is also believed to mark the arrival of spring in India and is a traditional event. Makara Sankranti is a solar event making it one of the few Indian festivals which fall on the same date in the Gregorian calendar every year.

However, people burns houses made of leaf on the day after conducting picnic in the houses made of leaf.

Later, the women or the family members offer sweets and pitha to the Sun during the sun rise.

It is believed that any auspicious and sacred ritual can be sanctified in any Hindu family, this day onwards.
