AGARTALA, Dec 24 (TIWN): Along with the nation, the State on Thursday observed the National Consumer Rights Day at Matangini Pritilata Hall.
Since the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 has been enacted on the same day in 1986, National Consumer Rights Day is observed every year in India on December 24.
On this day the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the President.
The programme has been inaugurated by Food, Civil supplies and Consumers Affairs Minister Bhanulal Saha in the presence of Chief Secretary of Food, Civil supplies and Consumers Affairs Department S. K Rakesh and others.
The main aim of the Act is to provide effective safeguards against different types of exploitation to the consumers. The exploitation includes unsatisfactory service by the shopkeepers, unfair trade practices and defective goods.
The enactment of this Act was considered as a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country.
The day is being celebrated to show the importance of the consumer’s movement and the need to make every consumer more aware of their rights and responsibilities.
The Act provides the consumers inexpensive and speedy redressal grievance and specific relief of compensation. It recognizes six of the eight rights of the consumer as provided in the UN charter.
During the programme, AMC Mayor Dr. Prafullajit Sinha, President of West Tripura District Parishad Dilip Das and others were also present at the programme.
It is to be mentioned here that the rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 flow from the rights enshrined in Articles 14 to 19 of the Constitution of India.
