AMC to cater 2000 families under sanitation project to control Howrah pollution : Mayor talks to TIWN

AGARTALA, Dec 24 (TIWN): When the Howrah is getting polluted day by day and erosion is taking place regularly, the concern authority is yet to take any kind of full-fledged programme to stop the rising pollution. Talking to TIWN correspondent, Mayor Dr. Prafullajit Sinha of Agartala Municipal Corporation on Wednesday said that to stop the dumping of human waste in the river they are planning to bring more 2000 families under the sanitation programme. It is to be mentioned here that the families which are using the Howrah River as a dumping zone for the human waste and polluting the water of the river, AMC has been planning to provide sanitation facility to the more 2000 needy families. Besides, Mayor Dr. Sinha has mentioned that in last five year tenure of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, Altogether 18, 800 beneficiaries were provided with sanitation facilities. Dumping of human excreta and solid waste has immensely resulted to the pollution of the river water. Continuous cleaning of clothes, washing of utensils and bathing of the cattle is the major source of the pollution. It is to be mentioned here that earlier with an aim to stop the erosion of the river bank of the Howrah, altogether 47.42 hector of land was decided to bring under the bamboo plantation but it seems like the decision is in idle position.

However, it is worthy to mention that the Forest Department it taking initiatives to control the erosion of bank of the Howrah River but the problem of the river does not end here, the river is also facing threat of major water pollution and so far the river water is worsening day by day.
Reportedly, the river water is getting polluted day by day in the capital due the regular dumping of garbage over the river or on the bank which later roll down and fall in to the river leading to water pollution.
People in the surrounding dump all the waste in the rivers, even the shops near by the rivers dun=mp the garbage in to the river.
Besides, the water pollution at the Howrah River is now at such a high level that the amount of toxins, chemicals and other dangerous bacteria found in the river are now almost threatening a danger to the lives of the people.
Howrah River which is the life line of the capital is under the major threat of water pollution which also hampering the surrounding of the River area and creating an unhygienic environment in the nearby area.
