Teliamura infant death case: Inquiry team yet to submit report

AGARTALA, Dec 24 (TIWN): Even after passage of several days, the inquiry team set by the government is yet to submit the report to the concerned department. The sources confirmed that though a team is set by the health department but so far no such major progress is witnessed in the case.

Demanding strict action against the accused doctor Pritam Debbarma for his alleged negligence in the treatment of an infant, the congress observed 12 hour strike on Monday at Teliamura.

Reportedly, the death of the 45 day old infant at Teliamura due to the negligence of the doctor in providing treatment has sparked off a widespread resentment among relatives of the deceased as well common people who have blockaded the national highway for three times. Angry people ransacked the hospital seeking immediate arrest of culprit doctor- Pritam Debbarma triggering panic prompting the administration to seek police intervention. Getting alarm, PCC Chief Birajit Sinha, opposition leader Sudip Roy Barman rushed to the spot, meet the victim family and assured that they will look into the matter.

The deceased is identified as Subhabrata Debnath (45-day old) who was admitted to Teliamura Rural Hospital with high fever by his father Biplab Debnath. After arriving at hospital, Biplab and his wife Jhuma spotted doctor on duty Dr. Pritam Debbarma was in long telephonic session. Even after several request the doctor did not show any interest to treat the doctor.  Angry relatives ransacked at the premises of the hospital to cater the attention of the doctor.

However, it is to be mentioned here that though health department ordered a high level inquiry into the death of the 45 day old child at Teliamura but so far no action is taken. After due examination of the report due action will be taken against the accused.

The sources further said that with the aim to save the accused doctor from the punishment of the law the doctor has been sent on leave by the authority.

The Tripura government has constituted a committee to inquire into the alleged death of a 45-day-old child due to negligence of a doctor in Teliamura rural hospital.

The committee is headed by Director of health service Dr K L Bhowmik and has been asked to investigate the matter and report by next seven days.

In the meantime, the department sent the accused doctor Pritam Debbarma on leave yesterday who was allegedly drunk and had not attended the child despite being stated critical on the fateful day. The child was administered polio vaccine on December 17 and he fell ill few hours after it was administered. 

A pall of gloom descended over the family members of the deceased, and are still awaiting justice for the death of their innocent child.
