AGARTALA, Dec 5 (TIWN): Governor Tathagata Roy on Saturday inaugurates the 3 day long national seminar on sustaining hill agriculture in changing climate on Saturday at Pragna Bhawan.
The program was organised by Indian Association of Hill Farming & ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region to lay stress on the issue of sustain hill agriculture.
It is to be mention here that The seminar has provided a platform for the scientists, researchers, policy maker, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders like state government officials and farmers for cross learning and identifying the technology for sustainable hill farming with an approach to resource conservation, mechanization and secondary agriculture so as to enable the farmers to reap more economic gain/profit from the farming. Farmers who have a tendency to make them absorbed in profession other than agriculture, will have more involvement in the agriculture and allied sectors and enrichment in agrarian economy will be made for the better livelihood options for the farming communities of mountain regions with special emphasis in NE India.
Speaking at the program Governor Tathagata Roy said that Hill agriculture is confined to Indian Himalayas which spread through 14 states in Western and Eastern regions and cover about 16 % of the geographical area and 4 % of the total population of India.
The seminar held discussion on themes and sub-themes including farming system approach for natural resource conservation and food security, Potentialities of horticulture in hill farming, Climate change- adaptation and mitigation strategies for hills, Integrated soil, water and nutrient management, Improved shifting cultivation practices, Farm mechanization and secondary agriculture, Plant and animal health management, Livestock, poultry and fisheries in agriculture, Technology dissemination.
To sustain agriculture in hills the 3 daylong seminar was organised at Pragna Bhawan.
