DM (West) ask to surrender licensed firearms by Nov 23

AGARATLA, Nov 18 (TIWN): Looking forward to the peaceful and smooth conduct of the municipal election which is slated to be held on December 9, DM (West) Millind Ramteke has ordered all the firearms licence holders people to deposit their weapons with the jurisdictional police stations on or before November 23, 2015.

As part of the model code of conduct, which came in to affect the issue of licence for arms will be totally prohibited. The prohibition will continue till the completion of the municipal election in the state.

However, Central and state government departments, public sector and other private sectors like banks, security agencies and Class-1 gazetted officers are excluded from the enforcement.

It is to be mentioned here that the licence holders, who do deposit their weapons, will be able to get their weapons back if they approach the concerned jurisdictional police officers after December 12.

Individuals seeking exemption from depositing their firearms in exceptionally deserving cases can file their applications stating the reasons for seeking exemption before the deputy commissioner of police of their respective jurisdiction on or before November 23, 2015.

As the authority is looking forward to safe conduct of the election in the state, the state administration has geared up with all safety measures.  The Union ministry of home affairs have turned down the request of Tripura state election commission to deploy central paramilitary forces for the election to Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and 19 other urban local bodies schedule. An official report says, state police are given charge to ensure free and fair polls, but the commission, after a meeting with political parties, had decided to deploy central paramilitary forces for the election. Tripura has over 10,000 CRPF, BSF and Assam Rifles jawans available on duty besides, Tripura State Rifles and police.

However, DM (West) Ramteke has also ordered that if anyone fails to surrender their firearms in the due time without proper explanation action will be taken under the provision of section 1959.
