Two day long seminar on police reforms and policing inaugurated

AGARTALA, Nov 15 (TIWN): Justice D.N.Choudhury, former judge Gauhati high court, inaugurated the two daylong seminar on police reforms and policing on Saturday at state guest house.

Justice D.N.Choudhury, former judge Gauhati high court  said that the seminar is organised to provide chairs and members of police complaints authorities from each state the opportunity to introduce themselves, share the latest developments within their authorities as well as if any new initiatives undertaken to strengthen  their working procedures.

Speaking at the program Sashi Prakash, former chief secretary of Tripura said that the seminar will also held discussion on the issue like how many complaints received in 2015, how many disposed, how many inquired into, recommendations made specifically how many cases in which disciplinary inquiry ordered and how many cases recommended under which FIRs.

He also said that the complaints authorities can also share latest developments with a focus on new proactive initiatives taken, including outreach efforts, awareness generation programmes, or good practices as well as challenges being faced.

Dr.Sankar Sen, former Director, NPA said that lack of police compliance with the final orders of police complaints authorities, and intimidation of threats to PCA complainants and witnesses are continuing problems across the states. These are significant setbacks for the authorities as accountability mechanisms added sen.

He also said that this session has provided an opportunity for the authorities to collectively discuss these recurring problems and the best ways to address them.

A special newsletter of Tripura police accountability commission was also inaugurated by Justice D.N.Choudhury, former judge Gauhati HC.

The two daylong sessions will also be attended by Justice A.V.Potdar, chair, Maharashtra on Sunday.
