Advanced training to produce bamboo products

AGARTALA, Nov 11 (TIWN):Tripura Government and Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA) initiated few steps to focus on pushing up the turnover in the Bamboo sector and also fetch more livelihood opportunities for people. The objective of increasing turnover of bamboo sector, along with improving the sustenance opportunities are sought to be achieved through cluster development approach involving a few entities. Institution building, industrial linkages, better market and credit facilities coupled with Resource up gradation and working on a project mode all make up as factors influencing the development approach.

Some twenty youth from the remote areas of Tripura have joined a short term training programme sponsored by Tripura Japan International Cooperation Agency (TJICA) in collaboration of Bamboo and Cane Development Institute in Agartala.

Traditionally `jhum’ cultivators, these youth are now ready to start their own production units of bamboo products. They learn to make bamboo products by using latest tools and techniques. During the training period, the students get free food and lodging facilities along with monthly stipend of Rs. 2,000. It will help them to financially support their families during the training period. The trained youth are provided with required production centre, tools, raw materials and market linkages so that they can settle in their trade. The Tripura Japan International Cooperation Agency runs three showrooms selling bamboo products made by its trained artisans. It encourages bamboo artists to find suitable market for their products
