Prostitution racket: Court sent 34 accused to Jail custody, next hearing on Nov 13

AGARTALA, Nov 9 (TIWN): Altogether 34, including 18 women and 16 men were sent for 5 days of Jail Custody by the Special Court on Monday early morning. According to the police report, after five days of interrogation the accused will be again produced before the court on November 13. Police sources further claimed that again on Monday they have conducted raid on the area. West Police on Sunday busted a prostitution racket arresting 34 accused and the owner of the restaurants from the Adviser Choumuhani. The drive has been lead by West Police SP Bijoy Nag, Additional SP of West Police Station Sarmishta Chakraborty along with other officials. The arrested accused are of 16 – 25 year of age, mostly. The drive has been continuing from 1 pm and ended by 3 pm in the afternoon. Reportedly, the Additional SP of West Police Station Sarmishta Chakraborty played an important role during the drive.

Raid has been conducted in three restaurants at Advisory Choumuhani which has been carrying out the trade for prolonged many days. Acting on the complaints of the residence of the area, the police on Sunday arrested Modan Debbarma, owner of Tring Restaurant, Abhijit Bhattacharjee, owner of Abba Restaurant. However, during the raid the Police could not manage to arrest the owner of the Samba Restaurant, Shyamal Bhattacharjee. Instead they have nabbed the wife of Shyamal Bhattacharjee. Some pairs were arrested from rooms and various corners of the restaurants.

According to residents of the area, the sex trade was flourishing for several months in a rented house.

“This trade is going on for prolonged many days. This trade has been polluting the environment in the area”, said a local.

When the girls use to enter the restaurants they use to hide their face cloths. This trade has been spoiling the scenario of the area, complained another local.

However, after the arrest the guardians of the accused were observed crowded in front of the West Police Station. According to the police report the girls are kept in the West Women Police Station and the boys are in the West Police Station.
