AGARTALA, Nov 4 (TIWN): Fence in the Indo-Bangla borders areas in Tripura where erected to curb the rampant smuggling of phensedyl, miscreants are busy in the intrusion of phensedyl through Churaibari.

Altogether 3500 bottles of phensedyl valued Rs. 9 Lakh has been seized by the Churaibari Police.

The huge consignment was seized from a lorry bearing registration number TR04-A-1587. The lorry was of Food Corporation of India which was heading to the State carrying phensedyl in the sacks of rice grains, illegally.

Churaibari Police has arrested the lorry driver Surjya Mohan Debnath, resident of Sepahijala District.

The incident came into lime light after the employee of the Sales Tax Department initiated a search operation.

The territory and the demographic composition of the border area make it favorable for Bangladeshis to sneak into India and also to get easily assimilated with the local masses.

It is a matter of worry that despite of strict security in the various part of the state, ganja smuggling has been continuing.

The smuggling is going on along the India-Bangladesh border where security has been tightened to curb the illegal trade.

However, large scales of ganja plantation are being done in the interior and inaccessible areas of the border region. Therefore, the Government agencies had to face tough time since most of these plantations are tucked away in hills and forests.

According to the source, hundreds of smugglers based in Tripura are sending spurious Phensedyl, a cough syrup, with an exceedingly high dose of codeine and other drugs to Bangladesh. Besides, numbers of smugglers are engaged in both the sides of the border in smuggling illegal Phensedyl and liquor.

However, it is to be mentioned here that State police often detains vehicles and seize thousands of bottles of Phensedyl consignments and illegal liquors that are legally imported. But, the network is very deep-rooted and widespread.
