AGARTALA, Nov 3 (TIWN): Even after several doldrums faced by the truck drivers and passengers, the so-called responsible authority could not manage their valuable time to take a notice of the miserable condition of the Assam-Agartala National Highway. Reportedly, once again the National Highway has turned muddy and unfit for movement of vehicles during light rainfall here last night. According to local sources, a large number of vehicles including good laden lorries were stranded due to the miserable condition of 20-km national highway from Lowerpoa of Assam to Churaibari Gate. Talking to TIWN correspondent on Tuesday, PWD official Deepak Das claimed that the renovation work for the National Highway is under way and it is a continuous process of renovation. He further said that the agencies are working day and night to complete the renovation and most of the portion of the road is already done and the condition of the road is now improved from earlier, claimed Das.Question arise if the renovation of the widened portion of the road is complete why the trick drivers are yet stranded due to the miserable condition of 20-km national highway from Lowerpoa of Assam to Churaibari Gate.
Though, the movement on the national highway often get suspended due to the deplorable condition of the road in the Assam side but even after several plea the Assam government is also least bothered about the renovation of the road, resulting the truck drivers facing tough time in travelling on the road.
The condition of these stretches of the highways has become so bad that in some patches these have turned into virtual craters. In fact, the deplorable condition of these national highways has led to resentment amongst local people, with the demand for their maintenance growing and intensifying.
The poor condition of the NH44 has lead to endless sufferings for the state people.
After the state PWD department took over the charge of maintenance of NH-44, the PWD has not work up to the mark for its maintenance. After the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MORTH) handed over development and maintenance of 104 km of the Assam Agartala National Highway (NH-44) to the PWD from Border Roads Organization (BRO) in July 16th, 2013, the condition of theNH-44 has worsen day-by-day due to negligence of PWD.
State Govt's apathy towards maintaining NH-44 in proper condition resulted in turning Tripura's lifeline NH-44 into a ditch in CM Manik Sarkar's so called 'golden era' and has turned to death trap and is left in pathetic condition raising the woe of the common people.
