Uncertainty looms: Young Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar’s flight cancelled from Scotland

AGARTALA, Nov 3 (TIWN): Uncertainty looms over the arrival of young Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar after her flight from Scotland cancelled due to heavy fog in London on Tuesday.

Uncertainty over the arrival of the Golden Girl in the State on November 4 will lead to the cancellation of the arrangements made in the state for giving her congratulation over her achievement.

It is to be mentioned her that it was decided that Dipa Karmakar and her coach will be given rousing reception at the Agartala airport onNovember 4.

Later, a civic reception was decided to given to the fifth position holder in world gymnast competition held at Glasgow, Scotland at Rabindra Satabarshikhi Bhawan on November 5.

During the programme, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar is schedule to remain present.

Now, after her flight cancelled in Scotland, uncertainty looms over the preparation and the felicitation programme.

According to the courses, the programme may be postponed and may be scheduled after November 5.

Young Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar made history on October 25 becoming the first ever Indian to qualify for the finals of World Gymnastics Championships.

American Simone Biles scored 15.633 to lead the eight-woman finalists list, with Karmakar qualifying 7th, ahead of Alexa Moreno of Mexico, who scored 14.899.

The 22-year-old Golden Girl from Agartala scored a total of 14.900 points in the women's Vault qualification at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow.

On the subsequent second vault, the Tsukahara 720, Dipa would twist alright but lose her way stepping out of the lane and be docked points immediately – a 0.3 penalty that would yield a lowly 14.066 (Difficulty 6.0), for an average of 14.683 and a fifth position in the world. It was 0.983 points off the gold, and 0.858 short of the bronze medal.

In 2014 Commonwealth Games, Karmakar won bronze medal in the same event, becoming the first Indian woman Gymnast to do so. This August, she also won bronze medal at the Hiroshima Asian Championships.
