AGARTALA, Oct 29 (TIWN): Media sensitization workshop on Pentavalent and IPV has been organized on Thursday at Agartala Press Club.

During the programme it has been mentioned that along with the nation the state has also taken initiative on to provide single shot of pentavalent vaccine.

This vaccine will provide protection to infants from five life-threatening ailments, including Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus (DPT), Hepatitis B and pneumonia due to Hib (Haemophilus influenza type b).

With the initiation of the vaccine, after 6, 10 and 14 weeks where the children were provided with two vaccines this time they will be provided with one.

Besides, the dose of Hepa-B and DPT booster will continue like earlier schedule. Within one year of giving one dose, another two doses can be provided with a gap of one month.

Detailing about the pentavalent vaccine it has been mentioned that every 10 dose of vaccine cost around Rs. 1, 300 but the vaccination will be provided free.

The ‘five in one’ pentavalent vaccine is expected to be initiated on regular basis in West Tripura District under the universal immunisation programme of the Government of India from November 1.

However, in the year 2013 the executive board of the WHO approved the targets, goals and timelines of the Polio Eradication and Endgame plan (2013-18). IPV will be an addition to existing schedule of OPV. And it will be introduced by December 2015.

Only one IPV injection will be given to a child at 14 week age along with OPV3. Combining IPV with OPV provides the advantages of both vaccines: strong intestinal immunity and antibody protection against all three serotypes of Polio virus.

This vaccine cannot be given after one years of age.

Besides, it has been mentioned that children with moderate to severe acute illness should not be administered with pentavalent vaccine until their condition improves.

This programme has been organized with the initiatives of the National Health Mission of Tripura.

During the programme, Member Secretary of SHFWS, Dr. J. Das, Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, IAS M. Nagaraju and other were present at the programme.
