AGARTALA, Oct 25 (TIWN): Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s role in constituting states human rights commission was severely criticized by former MP and PDF leader Ajoy Biswas. Addressing a press conference on Saturday evening at Agarala Press Club he claimed that the state government and chief minister was not willing to have a human rights commission. Even though all states in the country has constituted a human rights commission but the left ruled state was always against having such a commission, Biswas said. The SC recently said it was the statutory duty of the state govt to set up human rights commissions. He said after Supreme Court directive, the state government was forced to have a human rights commission in the state, the initiative could have taken earlier by the state government.Due to unwillingness of the government, the people of the state was deprived from their fundamental rights. Chief minister was not interested to have a commission only to safe guard CPI(M) party interst alleged the former MP. Sarkar excuse for not having a human commission was there was shortage of retired high court judges. After supreme court directive, Sarkar has to shift from his earlier stand said Biswas adding CPI(M) is a double standard party. The party claims to be protector of democracy but in reality there act is against democracy. The Left Front government few days back decided to constitute the much expected state human rights commission to deal with issues of human rights and cases of their violation. After completion of some formalities, the commission is expected to be formed by January next year.

Chief minister Manik Sarkar, while participating in a discussion here recently, said his government was keen on the commission but paucity of suitable retired judges had become a stumbling block.
