13 years old child prepares an Idol of Goddess Durga at Pratapgarh

AGARTALA, Oct 17 (TIWN): A child artist of Class 7 of Pratapgarh also posses happiness in preparing idols of goddess Durga besides his regular stuff of studying and playing cricket.

Diptanu Das, Son of Gopal Das like all other artist is busy in giving finishing touches to the idols of Hindu deity Goddess Durga ahead of the upcoming Hindu festival, Durga Puja.

Durga is depicted as a powerful goddess, riding a raging lion, holding aloft ten war weapons in her ten hands. Her trident is plunged into the side of a monstrous buffalo, out of whose body emerges the dreadful demon or evil.

He began the preparations of idol months back.   Apart from regular studies he also brings out time to prepare idol of the deity. Although this year, the artisans are focusing more on traditional art but Dipatanu is more interested about preparing the idol with all devotion and simplicity.

Dipatanu says that he prepares idols for his own interest and he doesn’t do it for any name and fame. Although his idols are not prepared for any club or organisation but he has done it because he loves to do it.

Without any investment of huge amount of budget Diptanu has prepared the idols with the household stuffs. Poster colours, paper boards, clothes, cotton and other household goods are used for preparing the idols.

Though his idols were lack the charm of huge amount of budget but his idols have the touch of innocence, simplicity and devotion.

However, Dipatanu also wishes to polish his skill and art in this field of idol making in the coming days.

Goddess Durga is worshipped all over India in different forms. The festival is called Durga puja in the eastern state of West Bengal while in the rest of India it is known as "Navaratri".

The festival which symbolises the triumph of good over the evil is marked by prayers, processions and musical programmes.

Legend has it that "Asuras" or demons from the other world invaded heavens after a hundred years of war. The Hindu trinity of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu created goddess Durga, the most powerful of all gods and goddesses to vanquish the demons.

It is believed that the Goddess makes her annual visit to the world and the festivities are meant to welcome her.

On this occasion, homes are given a facelift. They are re-painted and decorated to 'receive' the Goddess. Smaller idols of the goddess are also installed in homes.

The festival culminates with the immersion of the idols into the water body.
