AGARTALA, Sept 25 (TIWN): Election Commission’s order in last week to Mizoram Govt. to conduct a special summery revision of refugees, including Tripura Bru refugees; has triggered protest at Mizoram. According to the reports, 2 of the Mizo unions namely The Young Mizo Association (YMA) and the Mizo Students Federation (MSF), declared that they are against the order of Election Commission, as bru refugees are not anyhow to be allowed to cast votes as they had rejected to come back at Mizoram, for their conditions.

Tripura Govt. also since long back was asking the Mizoram govt. to solve the issue.  But, due to both of the govt.’s debates and disputes regarding Bru refugees’ identity, they are deprived of voting rights, which is also a violation of human rights. Moreover, although the refugees original documents describe them as the resident of Mizoram, they have declined to go back to Mizoram unless Mizo govt. fulfills their demands.

Election Commission asked all the sates for a special summery revision of  advice on last month, almost all states in the country including Mizoram have undertaken a special summary revision of photo electoral rolls within January 1, 2016. The Election Commission again on last week asked the Mizoram election department to conduct the revision in the refugee camps which are based in NE state Tripura.

But as soon as Election Commission had announced that decision, various unions at Mizoram started to oppose the election commission’s decision. YMA general secretary Vanlalruata told media, “The refugees had rejected their native place, so they have to come back to Mizoram and ask for their rights. But unless they comesback they will not have any rights on postal ballots”.

Moreover, since 1995, the the refugee voter’s names are listed in Mizoram Voter List.

However, it’s to be mentioned that the ego clash between these Mizo people and refugees living at Tripura seems unending. Tripura govt. asked Mizo govt. to take back them to the state. But due to refugees rejection of going back has kept the problem unsolved. However, Election Commission’s decision although unliked by a group of organization, but Mizo govt. is now bound to do that.
