AGARTALA, Sept 18 (TIWN): Tripura is facing acute shortage of everyday essential goods and fuel as the Assam - Agartala highway has been broken due to the torrential rain. There are incidents of landslides which have blocked the road. The roads have turned muddy due in many places to the mud slides and rain.
This highway is the lifeline of Tripura.the only by this route by which Tripura is connected to the rest of north east and India.
Many of the trucks carrying goods and fuel have been stranded in the road due to the blockage. Work is being done in a slow pace to repair the road.
Tripura Govt have been in talks with the Assam Govt to repair the part of the national which falls in their state. The Assam government have agreed to do so.
The stranded truck drivers are demanding to improve the condition of the highway.
The only other option for the state is railway. Tripura is recently connected to the rest of the India via a meter gauge railway. But the rail service has been stopped due to broad-gauge conversion works in southern Assam.
Tripura has 856 km border with Bangladesh, 109 km border with Mizoram and 53 km border with assam.the govt have to take steps to repair the road fast or look for other option. Goods can also be delivered to Tripura via Bangladesh.
