47.42 hector of land to be brought under bamboo plantation to stop erosion of Howrah River bank

AGARTALA, September 17 (TIWN): Aiming to stop the erosion of the river bank of the Howrah, altogether 47.42 hector of land will be bought under the bamboo plantation, said District Forest officer of West District Rajat Das in a meeting of the existing committee at West Tripura District Council conference hall, recently.Enhancing the initiatives taken to stop the erosion of the river bank of the Howrah, he further said that currently 27 Hector of the area has been already brought under the Bamboo cultivation.Detailing about the fund provided under the MGNREGA, he mentioned that a total of Rs. 2.36 crore has been provided for the forestry by the District Magistrate of the West. To do this work altogether fifty five thousand man days has been generated.It is worthy to mention that the Forest Department it taking initiatives to control the erosion of bank of the Howrah River but the problem of the river does not end here, the river is also facing threat of major water pollution and so far the river water is worsening day by day.However, the river water get contaminated due to practice of manual cleaning of septic tanks, direct connection of overflow pipes of septic tanks into storm water drain, relatively large number of kaccha latrines and practice open defecation.Reportedly, the river water is getting polluted day by day in the capital due the regular dumping of garbage over the river or on the bank which later roll down and fall in to the river leading to water pollution.

Besides, the water pollution at the Howrah River is now at such a high level that the amount of toxins, chemicals and other dangerous bacteria found in the river are now almost threatening a danger to the lives of the people.

Howrah River which is the life line of the capital is under the major threat of water pollution which also hampering the surrounding of the River area and creating an unhygienic environment in the nearby area.

Dumping of human excreta and solid waste has immensely resulted to the pollution of the river water. Continuous cleaning of clothes, washing of utensils and bathing of the cattle is the major source of the pollution.

Besides, it is a matter of worry that there is no major industry plant in Agartala, but still the pollution is increasing due to negligence of the public s well as the authority.

During the meeting, District Forest Officer Das also informed that in the current financial year a total of 2 lakh nursery of Timber and 8 lakh of other saplings nursery will be made.

However, in the coming year total 1 lakh nursery will be enforced, added.

Supervising Engineer of Drinking water and Health Department Bholanath Roy said that before durga puja through pilot project water will be deployed every houses of the two panchayat that is Shachindra Nagar and East Barjala.

Besides, 20 lakh of fish fingers will be supplied said Official of Fisher Department Bijoy Roy and a total of ten people will be provided with Ariator and many other initiative will be taken.
