Gram Sabhas to spread electoral roll revision awareness
TIWN

Agartala, Sep 3 (TIWN / IANS) Gram Sabhas would be held in all villages across the country as part of the awareness campaign for the special summary revision of electoral rolls, an official said here on Thursday.

The decision came into effect keeping in mind the instructions of the Election Commission.

"Gram Sabhas would be held in all villages, and similar public gatherings would take place in municipal council or corporation areas, to make people aware about the special summary revision of photo electoral rolls across the country," an election commission official said.

He said: "The commission wants a error free voters' list, including all eligible people in the vital rolls. In the Gram Sabha, existing rolls would be read out and suitable steps would be taken on the spot."

The dates of the Gram Sabha would be fixed by the election departments of the states concerned or election authorities.

Almost all states in the country have undertaken a special summary revision of photo electoral rolls with January 1, 2016, as the qualifying date.

After the revision is completed, final photo electoral rolls would be published in every state in the first or second week of January next year.

Tripura's additional chief electoral officer Debashish Modak said that Gram Sabha was held in all villages on Thursday in the state. Similar public meetings were also held in all the wards of each municipal council and corporation area.

Another round of such meetings would be held again in Tripura on September 10.

Modak said that to ensure clean electoral lists, and eliminate errors and duplication of names, all states launched the National Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Programme last year.
