AGARTALA, July 28 (TIWN): Being fed up with the alleged sub-standard construction works of drain in the ward number 5 of North Charilam Panchayat under Charilam block, Locals had forcefully stopped the construction work. When the issue has been informed to the PWD, Executive Engineer of Bisramganja PWD Bishwajit Debbarma assured the locals to look into the matter and to take an immediate action.

The drains which had been a long time demand of the residents of the town has been undergoing  construction under Public Works Department (PWD) at a cost of Rs. 9.62 Lakhs.

According to report, the construction work has to be completed within one month but it had surpassed. The locals complained that compare to the sand used for the construction the amount of cement is very less. Besides, the constructors are using sub-standard brick chips and mostly the rubbish of the bricks.

The residents further alleged that the entire construction works of the drains are being done in an unscientific manner and if the works continue like this then there are possibilities of the drains getting damaged or developed cracks soon at several stretches.

“We have been suffering from water-logging problem on this road for a long time and felt a great relief when the construction works of the drains begun. But now we are not happy to see the quality of works as it ensures that water cannot go out through these drains”, said the locals.

According to the residents, the drain will collapse within a short period of time because it amply shows the bad quality of work allegedly done by the contractors.

“The contractors are using sub-standard materials and the concerned engineers of PWD department are turning blind eye towards the matter and totally fail to check the illegal practice”, said the residents.

Regarding the embezzlement going on in the area, the locals had made a written complaint to the officials of the PWD.

However, the residents of the area are hoping that the PWD authority would conduct a monitoring of the entire construction works so that no scope left for sub-standard works.
