AGARTALA, July 27 (TIWN): After a major halt the 100 MW gas-based Monarchak power plant in West Tripura district, about 50 km from here had resumed generation of power for the state despite the state owned Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) is reluctant to buy the power due to the high power cost. “The Monarchak opened by spending a huge amount has resumed its power generation after a major halt,” said a reliable source of Monarchak on Sunday. The source said that ONGC had started supplying gas to the Monarchak 100 MW gas based thermal power plant after getting their gas reserve recovered from where they were supposed to supply the gas.At present the plant is undergoing trial run prior to kick of commercial generation of power from the plant. The official of the plant further added that Monarchak is also planning to get the Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) soon to start the commercial power generation.Earlier the ONGC had to suspend its gas supply temporarily due to some crisis in its reservoirs from where the ONGC was supposed to pipe gas to Monarchak power plant.

On July 11 the ONGC held a meeting with the plant management committee here in Agartala taking up the issue of the crisis of gas. ONGC had assured that by mid August they would try to resume its gas supply after recovering their old gas wells.

However, recently the ONGC managed to resume the gas supply to the plant as per the requirement of the power plant, said the officialon Sunday to TIWN.

He said that as per the agreement, the ONGC is supposed to supply 5 MMSCM per day gas to the plant but the supply has been stopped for the past few days and had left the plant in hefty loss.

The Tripura unit of ONGC was supplying gas for the project run by the North East Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO), a government undertaking. Here it may be noted that TSECL had already inked power purchase agreement with both OTPC and NEEPCO to buy allocated power but this has now turned bleak with power shortage here.

Earlier the TSECL had a tug of war with the NEEPCO as the body was reluctant to purchase power from Monarchak due to high power cost as compared to Palatana OTPC plant. At present the cost is Rs. 4 per unit of power, which has led its power to be futile for the TSECL, a state government undertaking body.
