AGARTALA, July 26 (TIWN): Successfully moving towards containing the insurgent activities along the India-Bangladesh bordering Tripura, the Left front government managed to decline the insurgency as compared to the other northeastern states. Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy recently replying to the exclusive interview of a local television appreciated the Left front government and said, “The insurgency is no more a problem for Tripura state as compared to other NE states.”Situated along the Indo-Bangladesh border area, between West Tripura and Khowai Districts was once severely affected by militancy. Tripura, the location of one of India's most strong insurgencies, has now developed into one of the most peaceful states in India’s troubled Northeastern region, said Roy being pleased with the role of government.“While some north-eastern States still grapple with insurgency, Tripura has overcome it,” Roy said the newsmen in an interview. As in the case of the other States of the region, Tripura was, at different points of time, caught in the gesture of insurgency that arose from Nagaland in the 1950s. In view of declination of the insurgents activity Roy said that the role of Tripura government is appreciable as it maintained its security system towards containing such insurgency related crimes here in the state.

High voltage insurgency and an chain of violence by the insurgents once disrupted the civic life and communications, and led to the closure of many educational and financial institutions, threatening the authority of the State.

But, the State under the leadership of Left front government took on the problems in a strategic and resolute manner. Several developmental activities have now come up as a boon to the state as well as for the other NE states with a new era of bi-lateral relation with the neighbouring Bangladesh.

With the decline of insurgency in states like Tripura, socio-economic development has gained momentum. And the people are now hopeful of a better future.

Meanwhile the Centre claimed that the overall security situation in North-East has shown signs of improvements and mutual understanding with the neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar and China has helped easing the situation. The security situation has improved not only in terms of declining levels of violence but also through public revulsion against mindless acts of terrorism.

However, it may be mentioned here that as against 67 victims of insurgency in 2004, 29 civilian and 11 security force personnel were killed in 2005. According to government sources, over all insurgency related incidents registered a 50 percent decline.

In addition surrender of 225 insurgents of the state’s two major outfits the NLFT and ATTF killing of another 19 by the security forces also raised prospect of a sustainable peace.

Besides, it is to be mentioned here that in the recent past the Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh had held a meeting for the first time with the CMs of all the NE states to review the current situation in the bordering areas.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar claimed that the attitude of the Union Government in the last 28 years of independence has not been very encouraging as a result this has been palpable letdown on the part of central government to support the northeastern states to fully exploit its rich natural resources.

Sarkar urged the Centre to persuade Bangladesh to destroy all terrorist hideouts on their soil, freeze bank accounts of top leaders, arrest the militants and hand over them to India.

Sarkar observed, on January 3, 2015, "The insurgency has not been uprooted yet, despite all out efforts. Militants are still on the operational mode in some interior places of the State. According to the police report Tripura has secured extraordinary success through its model of a Police-led counter-insurgency campaign against what was once a raging militancy. This success was secured by establishing a remarkable police presence.

It is also to be mentioned here that Left-ruled Tripura on Wednesday decided to withdraw the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) which gives sweeping powers and judicial immunity to security forces in conflict-hit areas. The law was enforced in the state 18 years ago to curb terrorism.
