SILCHAR/AGARTALA July 25 (TIWN): This is National Highway No 53. This Road is connected Silchar to Karimganj, Silchar to Agartala, and many other areas are connected though this Highway. The deplorable condition of the National Highway at Patharkandi and Baraigram has once again put the bus / Truck services from Agartala to other parts of the North-East in total disarray and the travel agents are in dilemma whether to continue their services with the existing road. Sources at the travel agency said, due to apathy of Assam Government and BRTF towards improving the condition of the highway between Karimganj and Patharkandi, road blockade occurs daily.
It may be mentioned that due to flash flood at the highway at Patharkandi and adjoining areas , the road has been virtually reduced to a ditch and buses and trucks pass through heavy risk of accidents or breakdown. At an average, one truck has met with accident and dip into the river .
Though of late GREF has undertaken repair of the road, the incessant rains had made the task more difficult. Moreover, the residents of the area are opposed to the move of the BRTF to raise the level of the road. As a result of which the repair works came to a halt. The bus/truck owner is already in trouble after the increase of road tax by the Tripura governments. “With this development we have no alternative but to increase the fare”, sources added. Accordingly a passenger has to pay the same amount for travelling to either Shillong or Guwahati from Agartala and Kumarghat or Ambassa from Guwahati.
