AGARTALA, July 24 (TIWN): Tripura ranks first in suicide cases among the states of the Northeast and comes in 4th position just behind Kerala in India. While Sikkim tops the list as the number one suicide state in India The list is compiled from the Suicidal Deaths in India Report published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Government of India.
The 2014 statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveal that 1,31,666 people died of suicide in India, with Tripura topping the list with 20.3 percent, followed by Arunachal Pradesh (12.1 percent), Meghalaya (3.6 percent),), Mizoram (11.1 percent), Nagaland (0.6 percent) Assam ( 11.1 percent), Assam (11.1 percent) and Manipur (2 percent).
Tripura appears to have been a suicide-prone state in the past decade. The crime record bureau’s figure of 64 suicides in a month.
Tripura the rate of suicide which seems more in the interior areas where largely tribals reside is due to poverty and also unemployment.Tripura also has an open border with Bangladesh whereby huge cache of drugs have made way to the market.Over abuse of these substance can lead to mood swings which include depression.Also amongst the elders the farmers who have been through a lot of competition and have lost land there is a social problem of one lending by people who charge high interest rates in the state.These factors may also add to the alarming rates of suicide in the state of Tripura.
Over the years these northeast states have been exposed to a host of hostile environment and drugs , which in the long term affect the minds of the children .Places like Sikkim also have been going through this period of the youth and women living a life devoid of simple happiness and the children are spending less time with parents say psychiatrists.
