According to report, acting on a tip-off 168 battalion of BSF led by it’s Assistant Commandant Robin prevent the bid of transporting the contraband through an unfenced stretch of Ramthakur Para of Belonia.
On being tracked, the accused dropped the bike bearing registration number TR03-E-5667 and a plastic bag containing Ganja and managed to escape taking advantage of the unfenced border. Later, BSF personnel found the consignment contained ganja, said Robin.
The consignment has been handed over to the customs officials.
It is matter worry that despite of strict security in the area the ganja smuggling has been continuing. Mostly along the India-Bangladesh border despite the frontier has been tightened to curb it.
Plantations of ganja are done on a large scale in the interior and inaccessible areas of the border region. Since most of these plantations are tucked away in hills and forests, government agencies have a tough time to detect and destroy them.
India has been erecting barbed wire fence and putting up floodlights on the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram to check trans-border movement of militants.
