AMC wards increased to 49 after delimitation's, election to held on December next

AGARTALA, July 23 (TIWN): Wards in Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and eight municipal council out of 13 - have been increased said Urban Development Minister ManiK Dey. Talking to reporters at secretariat on Wednesday he said as per the plan, the number of AMC seats would be increased from 35 to 49 and 18 constituencies was increased for eight municipal councils.

Before publication of final delimitation in constituencies, the government would provide a scope for claim and objection. All the District Magistrates (DMs) have been asked to complete the delimitation process August 17.

The publication of delimitation in seats would be done on July 31 while claim and objection are allowed by August 7. And the final publication of delimitation process would be made on August 17 to pave the way for elections to all civic bodies.

According to sources, state’s total urban population stands at 5, 22,613. According to sources, the civic election process would gain ground after Durga puja as the battle of ballots is expected to be held. The election of urban civic bodies is expected to held in December.

With a population of around five lakh, the Agartala Municipal Corporation would look after the urban areas of 76 sq km.Agartala is the second largest city in northeast states after Guwahati in Assam.

The Agartala Municipality was constituted in 1871 during the reign of erstwhile king, Maharaja Chandra Manikya (1862-96).The first British Political Agent, A.W.B. Power was appointed for princely ruled Tripura in 1871 and become the chairman of the Agartala Municipality.Tripura merged with the Indian Union Oct 15, 1949.
