AGARTALA, July 20 (TIWN): Corruption rampant at Churaibari Check Post gate bordering Tripura with Assam allegedly due to the mutual understanding between the concerned salex tax officials and the truck drivers who find an easy entrance in Tripura carrying fake permits. Taxable goods are being allowed to enter Tripura in exchange of hefty amounts which of course increase the pockets of sales tax officials and the gateman.

Several such incidents had occurred in the previous month which continues till today. It was alleged that the concerned gateman at Churaibari check post along with the sales tax officials are actively engaged collecting hefty profit from the truck drivers who are often being allowed to enter the corridor carrying goods and fake permits.

The lorries which head forward carrying goods from abroad and other states parks at Churaibari check post for couple of days and later maximum lorries amongst those which carries fake permits finds an easy entrance in Tripura without paying any tax for the taxable goods and items.

Several such vehicles often move from Churaibari gate and arrive here in Tripura whether they carry phensydils or other contraband items but never get detained at the checkpost not due to the negligence role but in return of hefty amounts which are ultimately being paid to the gatemen or the tax officials.

Several incidents also occurred where the trucks and the lorries are being allowed to pass the gate but later they get detained by some local police on their way to Agartala.

Allegations were raised against some police personnel over taking bribe from the truck drivers. The drivers also sometime manage to feed the police and arrive here in Agartala with those taxable goods or contraband items.

With the raising demands of narcotic items including phensedyl among a major portion of the people in neighbouring country Bangladesh, reportedly Churaibari check-post in North Tripura district turned as corridor for the phensedyl smugglers due to the negligence of concerned on-duty officers for a prolonged period.

Phensedyl is extremely popular in Bangladesh where liquor consumption is banned. Taking advantage of the situation, some unscrupulous traders of Tripura are reportedly smuggling the cough syrup across the border and it earns huge money.
