AGARTALA, July 16 (TIWN): Poor drainage system has led to the overflow of drain water resulting massive flood in Agartala city on Wednesday morning.

The commuters claimed that the downstream waterway of the drain has been completely blocked, that has resulted in accumulation of water and flooding on the upstream side. The water has started coming onto the road and there is a threat of the road being blocked as this is a very high traffic corridor between Melarmath to Kaman Chowmuhani.

The so-called decision after which the AMC authority closed all drains by concrete cover, the cleaning of soil and garbage was stopped resulting chocked drains as it cannot carry water and the water floods randomly on the streets.

The residents allege that the drains are being filled up with mud and debris, which has been leading to constant flooding in the area and affecting traffic movement as well.

Commuters got stranded in many parts of the city as major roads were flooded due to poor condition of drainage lines.

Some of the internal roads were inundated for hours. There were also reports of rain water causing damages to shops and housing blocks. There is no proper system to drain out water accumulating on roads. This leads to water logging and makes life miserable for citizens.

Interestingly, most of the drains of the capital are dumped with garbage which leads to blockage of dirty water making the surrounding smelly. Moreover, it invites various waterborne diseases to spread in this area. Also in some parts of the city drain water entered the shops and nearby houses resulting panic among the people.

This situation also hampered the businesses which are set in the Orient Chowmuhani, Sakuntala road, Netaji Chowmuhani, Ramnagar, Joynagar, Krishnanagar, including many other areas. Now the question arises, if the AMC is so concern about the poor drainage system in the capital then why the common people are facing such problems during the Rainy Season.

There are 8 to10 points in the city where water-logging are a perennial problem during monsoon seasons triggering serious traffic jams and flooding in various localities. The resident of Agartala has been facing serious water-logging problems for the last few years. The situation gets worse during rainy seasons forcing the people to walk through at least knee- deep water as the water doesn’t continuously flow through the drain due to improper sewage system.

A spell of hour’s heavy rains had cause chaos in the city exposing civic bodies, lack of preparedness to address the problem of water-logging.
