Women Commission held awareness camp on crimes against women and girl children
TIWN

SABROOM, July 15 (TIWN): An awareness camp has been organized by women commission today at Poangbari RD Block complex. Smt Purnima Roy,Chairman Woman Commission Agartala,MLA Rita Kar ,BDO Poangbari Manik Lal Baidya and other women representatives were also presented in the camp. They discuss many issues relating to crimes upon women and how to stop such heinous activities in the society.

Altogether 196 rape cases were registered here in Tripura till January 2015 with the record in the Financial Year (FY) 2014-15 shows a hefty climb to the crimes against women. Tripura witnessed 840 cases relating to crime against women till January, 2015, out of which 196 are rape cases. A total of 107 rape cases were lodged during the financial year 2013-14, whereas during the previous FY the figures rested at 108. However but the figures jumped to 196 during the 2014-15 FY.Despite International Women’s Day celebration, staging several awareness programmed and others by the Tripura police and other Govt. organizations, the crimes rate has emerged as a matter of concern now for the governmental and non-governmental bodies here in Tripura. Rape and other crimes against women, girl children has become a daily news feed here in the state with the govt. has put a serious negligence to it, as a result the rate of crimes has increased at an alarming rate in Tripura. According to the Crimes in India 2013 report published by National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB), Tripura had registered 1628 cases of various crimes against women during 2013.

Of these cases of cruelty by husbands and other relatives were the highest at 827, followed by 233 cases of rape, 124 cases of kidnapping and abduction and 29 cases of dowry-related deaths.

However, in 2012-13, the dowry deaths hiked at 796 and the very next fiscal year (2013-14), the figure touched 880.

Altogether 840 cases related to crime against women were registered by January 2015 across the state. Among the total women violence cases, 544 cases in connection to dowry death were lodged at different police stations.

Cases of crimes against women in Tripura are rising. In 2011, 1,503 such cases were registered while the number went up to 1,650 in 2012 and 1,706 in 2013. Beside from April 2013 to March 2014, the number of case relating to the women registered at 848 taking the number high till today.

When the crimes against women had already taken a top most position in Tripura, the state govt. has taken certain steps to curb it, like recruitment of more women police and setting up more women police station. But all these seem to have bowed down in front of the increasing rate of crimes against women in Tripura.

Therefore to mention here, organising seminars, workshops and awareness camp and recruiting more women police on curbing the rising crimes against women must not be enough here in the state at present because the way it has taken a giant shape, it is possible to curb the crimes related to women only when the police awake from their sleep and takes necessary steps against the accused.
