Tripura for enhancing funding of Police under Union Home Ministry's MPF, CM says: Tripura to play strategic role in NE

AGARTALA, July 15 (TIWN): Eyeing forward to play a strategic role in northeastern region and to throw a security challenge of newer kinds, Tripura Left front government had recently demanded the central government to upscale the funding pattern under the Union Home Ministry's Modernization of state Police Forces(MPF Scheme).Chief Minister Manik Sarkar urged the ministry to also look into the administrative difficulties of northeastern states where tendering process for MPF works suffer due to lack of vendors in the region.As such due to existing constraints, the time frame for completing projects in NE states needs to be enhanced to 36 months from 24 months as mandated under the guidelines, Sarkar demanded.However, Tripura government had demanded that the funding pattern for the state under the MPF needs to be enhanced as it needs.Sarkar in key note to the Union Minister Home Affairs mentioned that from the current year, the plan component under the MPF has been stopped.In absence of proper financial support by central government, state may find it difficult to locate resources for upgrading police infrastructure which may have an adverse impact on security scenario of the northeastern states.

In view of Tripura being a second most populated state in northeast in the emerging economic scenario, Sarkar said, “Tripura would play a strategic role in NE region.”

Sarkar highlighting the central allocation for 2014-15 and said that Tripura would have Rs. 7.27 crore in respect of modernisation of police or capacity building under the Pro-rata tentative allocations for 2014-15 (Central share).

Under the state share (non-plan) Rs. 0.81 crore whereas under the central allocation for 2014-15 (plan), Rs. 11.95 crore and under the state share (plan) Rs. 1.33 crore.
