AGARTALA, July 13 (TIWN): Following the controversy erupted with the concept of mobile tower radiation and its harmful effects, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) NE-I Circle Chief General Manager (CGM) D. P. Singh on Monday said that mobile tower radiation offers no adverse health and environmental effects in India or any other parts of the country. “The committee constituted by the Government of India in 2013 had proved that the radiations from mobile towers have not adverse heath or ecological effects,” D. P. Singh told reporters. He said: "India's stringent measures against radiations from mobile phones or Base Tower Stations (BTS) are ten times more than the USA and European countries."According to the officer, for the past 10 years the researches were conducted on this issue to trace if the radiations from the mobile tower have adverse effect on human health. He said that in 2010 Bombay IIT Professor Girish Kumar who heads the Electrical Engineering department at the university conducting a research said that the mobile tower radiations are dangerous for health. DoT constituted the committee, comprising experts from scientific, medical and research organisations, in January 10, 2012 directive by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. The court was hearing a writ petition on issues related to electro-magnetic field (EMF) radiations. The committee later found that Girish Kumar had made a false statement whereas the mobile tower radiation is not hazardous for health.

“The committee observed that his daughter, Neha Kumar, is selling radiation shielding solutions through her company NESA Radiation Solutions Private Ltd. On one hand, he is spreading misinformation and creating misconceptions and unfounded apprehensions in the mind of the public by sensationalizing and blowing out of proportion the effects of EMF radiation, and on the other hand, he is promoting his family business in related products (which do not even follow any national or international standards), thus throwing professional ethics to the winds,” Singh said.

He said, “The committee noticed that Prof (Girish Kumar) has not made any such disclosure about the studies being conducted by him.”

However, later Kumar confessed that he had made a false statement being under family pressure.

D. P. Singh clarifying that the radiations from mobile towers are not hazardous for human health said, “Regular audit of electromagnetic field levels from the mobile towers through TERM (Telecom Enforcement Resource Monitoring) cells of the DoT is being done to ensure that prescribed standards are implemented.”

Adding, he also said that here in Agartala BSNL experts had already examined some of the mobile towers being set up at Agartala Care Chowmuhni, MBB Club area, Kaman Chowmuhni and other areas of the city.

The CGM said that the DoT has recently sanctioned Rs.5, 336 crore for the improvement of mobile and internet services in eight northeastern states.
