Digital push: Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad unveils 3rd India's International Internet gateway at Agartala

AGARTALA, July 11 (TIWN): Union Minister for Telecom Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday unveiled the third international gateway for 10 Gbps internet service: Agartala linking Bangladesh Cox Bazar. The foundation was laid at Agartala Rabindra Bhawan. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) signed its first agreement with outside India, to buy bandwidth from Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company to provide internet services in Northeast. Union Telecom Minister Prasad laid the foundation stone in the presence of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy and other dignitaries remained present on behalf of BSNL at the ceremonial programme. Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad launched the project to strengthen telecom services in India's North Eastern states. Tripura will get 10Gbps (Giga bits per second) Internet Band With from Bangladesh’s submarine cable for the up gradation of the internet services of the State. However, to bring the high speed internet connectivity from Bangladesh Cox Bazar, BSNL would has to pay Rs. 7.2 crore annually to Bangladesh Government, said BSNL Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) Anupam Shrivastava during the programme. After a hectic persuasion spanning over 4 years the project got a nod which is expected to cater the need of entire northeastern states and rest of the country, said BSNL NE-I Circle Chief General Manager (CGM) D. P. Singh. Tripura will be gateway for reliable and super-fast Internet facility as Bangladesh government has agreed to allow India to use unspent bandwidth in the neighboring country’s Cox Bazar, a BSNL official said.

However, after Mumbai and Chennai the Left ruled Tripura is all set to become the third international internet gateway for internet service.

The entire project work is expected to be commissioned by 2016. Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed the agreement with the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his visit to Bangladesh on June 5.

“We would now lay the optical fiber cable network from Agartala to Integrated Check Post at Akhaura in the Indo-Bangla international border to connect Cox Bazar’s submarine bandwidth,” BSNL official said.

 The connectivity will facilitate northeastern states to be connected with reliable global telecom network, which will provide high-speed and uninterrupted telecommunication in another six months. Initially, BSNL will lease 10 GBPS bandwidth from Bangladesh's lone submarine cable operator, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL).
