AGARTALA, July 10 (TIWN): The awful condition of National Highway 44 continues. Replete with deep pits and pot holes, the national highway-NH44 running through Chandrapur to Khayerpur has led to many accidents. Similar is the condition with the road from Nagerjala to Milanchakkra.

Strewn with up to one feet of ditches, the bad condition of the road here is resulting in jerking of vehicles to the two-wheeler drivers, the risk of four wheelers toppling in these ditches always run high.

The busiest road connecting from Chandrapur to Khayerpur is left in accident prone zone. The only road connectivity that links mainland India with the eastern part of Meghalaya, Barak Valley in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura has for a long time now remained in a harrowing experience for helpless commuters.

At every yard or so there are deep pits and potholes dangerous for vehicle driving, alleged a passenger. Erosion of black carpeting is seen here and there; and no one can drive safely and smoothly on these roads.

Though a large number of accidents are happening due to bad condition of the national highways, leading to tyre puncture, spinal injuries and bones dislocation and injuries, no proper attention was being given to the problem even after several plea.

The residents alleged that the blatant corruption by the contractors, who use very poor material, led to early depletion of the roads.

Every year construction and maintenance work on the roads starts just before the onset of the monsoon. This period is chosen for a particular reason. While the contractors use very substandard material in the job, but once the water starts stagnating on the road in the rainy season, they have good alibi to blame the nature and escape accountability about the use of poor material, alleged the drivers who regularly travel on this road.

Frequent disruption of vehicular movement, alarmingly high rates of tragic accidents that claim scores of lives, have become the order of the day, but so far none of the authorities is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the major road have come to the rescue of the commuters.

To our major shock it has also come to notice that a ‘danger- warning board’ is also placed in the middle of the road for the awareness of the public but no action is taken for repairing the poor condition of the road from the authority.
