AGARTALA, July 8 (TIWN): Secretary for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) R. Vijaykumar on Wednesday visited the construction site of first ever flyover at Battala and had urged the concerned engineers for early completion of the work and to maintain quality work. The engineers of entrusted Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC) along with the Principal Secretary for state Public Work Department (PWD) Lok Ranjan accompanied Vijaykumar at the ongoing construction work site. Vijaykumar during his visit had also taken a stock of the situation of plan and design of the flyover which would be erected at the capital city, said the official. The construction work has kicked off from the main land here at Battala. The workers of the entrusted company along with the state PWD engineers are actively engaged to the work. But, the daily traffic congestion has become a matter of concern for the state traffic department. Two high level meetings were held earlier at DM office. Talking to TIWN on Wednesday Traffic Superintendent of Police (SP) Smriti Ranjan Das said, “We have increased out traffic personnel at Battala area to restrict the possibility of heavy traffic congestion.” Adding Das said, “We have increased our traffic police from 8 to 14 now.” He also added that the department had planned for three substitutes or alternate roads to restrict the traffic jams from Nagerjala to Battala, which probably can take a giant shape in future during the ongoing construction work of the flyover. The three substitute roads consist of Agartala Amtali bypass road which would allow only the heavy vehicles like trucks, lorries and others.

Whereas another border road is brought into the map which would permit only the light vehicles from A. D. Nagar via Rajnagar, Das said to TIWN.

However, despite all odds the workers and the labours are actively engaged to the construction work which kicked off full-fledged.

Besides, he also said that the traffic department and also the concerned administration had sought cooperation of public in regard of carrying out smooth and flawless work.

Expressing displeasure over the hawkers on the road side here at Battala, Das said, “It is very unfortunate that despite we free the traffic movement in the concerned road but the hawkers are likely to create the actual congestion during the ongoing construction work.”

“No doubt the High Court had ruled out to stop illegal eviction of the hawkers but at least the hawkers must keep a little faith on the problems of the pedestrians and other publics,” Das expressed.

He said, “The increasing number of hawkers on the road sides here in the capital city has brought a major hurdle for the common people who face a daily problem walking through the footpaths.”

According to a section of city dwellers, fly over bridge would be blessing for the people living in Agratala city, as the pupils can never be on time in their office or school due to the tremendous traffic issue. Mainly the Battala station, which have junction of more than four roads passing and connecting to a single road have been causing the maximum traffic jam.

The main motive of creating the Fly-Over Bridge is to seek the solution for maintaining the Traffic system in the city. As day by day, the population and the number of vehicles are increasing, the problems are arising in traffic system too, said the official.

The first ever 2-lane flyover in the capital city is expected to lower the traffic jam by at least 40% to 45% and it will make a smooth fast track movement of the vehicles.

According to the master plan the flyover, which will start from Drop Gate (Fire Service office), is scheduled to touch Fire Brigade Chowmuhani via Battala. A subway of the fly over will be created upto Melarmath. The Banayan tree and the temple at Battala will be remained untouched by the fly over.

As many as 100 pillars will cover the 2.5 km fly over. Once fly over is constructed, vehicles from the Nagerjala bus stand will continue to ply on the same path. It means that the vehicles leaving Nagerjala will not be allowed to catch the fly over to avoid traffic congestion, said the officials.
