AGARTALA, July 7 (TIWN): The so called ‘reputed’ state owned Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) is on the verge of losing its two Post Graduate courses with the Medical Council of India (MCI) issued a firm instruction to AGMC and asked to ready proper infrastructure and restore the crisis of faculty staffs according to the guidelines of the MCI at the earliest.

According to the source, MCI had recently instructed the college to follow the guidelines of MCI and act accordingly in regard of restoring the long term problems of the college being owned by the Tripura Government.

MCI issuing a stern warning had clearly mentioned that if the situation of lack of proper infrastructure and the faculty problems under General Surgery and Paediatric Post Graduate Courses continue, then the two courses would be cancelled.

MCI asked the authorities to restore the problems within 6 weeks from now. It also mentioned that if the inspection and the visitors of the MCI find any further problems after 6 weeks then the two PG courses would be cancelled.

The AGMC is currently left with permission to run just half of the courses which it initially had, because Tripura’s main medical college has lost half of its post-graduate courses after the Medical Council of India de-recognized six of them. The meeting recommended against granting further recognition to post-graduate courses in Pediatrics Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Psychiatry. General Surgery had already been de-recognised in August 2014.

Despite, AGMC managed to keep improper infrastructures, in PG courses the faculty crisis now has become a matter of concern. The General Surgery and Paediatric department at present lacks available books in the libraries and has no ICU and Burn Ward.

However the MCI recently asked the AGMC authority to recruit enough faculties to the PG courses and restore the problems at the earliest to facilitate the medical students.

It is worthy to mention here that the MCI team on June this year had carried out a surprise visit to the state AGMC which is believed to have  brought a tough time for the concerned authorities here.  Sudden visit of AGMC has given rise to such circumstances as this shall determine the future of the continuation of the official recognition of the MBBS degree in AGMC, which is one of the two most renowned medical colleges of Tripura.

The overall haphazard situation of AGMC has left skepticism about the security of the medical college’s MBBS students’ future as the MCI officials have this time come for an inspection without any imitation.

However, the fate of the state owned AGMC would be now decided only when the MCI team would visit the state after 6 weeks. At the meantime the AGMC were asked to keep ready in proper place and restore the faculty problems.
