AGARTALA, July 6 (TIWN): Despite of several tall claims of the state government to make Tripura self-reliant in fish production, most of the small and big fish markets of the state are yet dominated by Andhra Pradesh, Kolkata and Bangladeshi fish varieties.

Fishery Department of the state would focus on utilizing all the existing water bodies for fish farming and officially it has already been done but output is zero.

Besides, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar speaks in all the workshops to encourage the fish firming with improvised technique which would lead to high production of fishes. “More areas of the state would be brought under fish farming. It should be the next target”, said Chief Minister in a recent meeting of fishery.

Apart from digging ponds, if required the concern department should also create embankment or check dam to stop water in the hilly areas to create more water bodies under MGNREGA, he added.

He also urged to mend the unused pond and encourage the fish farmers to increase the production of the fish in the state.

With an aim to make the fish farmers of the state self-reliant, CM also urged to examine the funds under different central project and MGNREGA scheme, so that it can be utilized for the development of the fish farming of the state.

However, the initiatives taken under MGNREGA and other central schemes generated mandays for the daily wage laborers and creating water bodies in the state which would help the fish farmers but despite of several initiatives, small and big fish markets of the state are yet dependent over the imported fishes of outside of the state.

It is estimated that the state imports of Rs. 100 crore fishes in Tripura from different parts of the country and Bangladesh.
