Bamboo cultivation on the verge of extinction

UDAIPUR, June 18 (TIWN): Once called the hub of Bamboo and today the history of the bamboo cultivation is on the verge of extinction in Tripura.

There are various interior parts in the state where bamboo is on the verge of extinct.  People use the shoots to cook various dishes which lead in the slowdown of the growth of bamboo cultivation in the concern area.

Reportedly, in the Amarpur- Udaipur road the tribal women sit in the market with huge amount of bamboo selling at Rs. 20 per kilogram. The craze towards the taste of the bamboo shoot is not only hampering the growth of the bamboo but also paralysing the crafts made from bamboo. Bamboo crafts of Tripura stand as the icon for its elegant handicrafts with beautiful weaving and attractive designs. The styles and designs of the bamboo crafts are unique which are practised by different tribes of the state.

Bamboo is used for making many items such as furniture, pencil holders, lamp shades, trays, stools, baskets, vases, hand fans, decorations fans, window and door screens, shopping bags, purses, hats, tablemats, mugs, and many other articles.

The artisans of Tripura are well skilled in making exclusive crafts out of bamboo which is a unique art.

As per report, the Tripura Bamboo Mission (TBM) has taken several initiatives to develop the skills of the artisans so that they could make best out of Bamboo. The Mission has also taken initiatives for the integrated development of the bamboo in the state. They also aimed to sustain the growth of bamboo in the state.

Despite of several initiatives taken by the Tripura Government, the bamboo of the state is on the verge of extinction.

Alike scenario of selling bamboo shoots is quite common in every small and big markets there by leading to the destruction in the growth of market.
