KHOWAI, June 16 (TIWN): Seventy four kilometres from Agartala, Khowai district witnessing the malaria outbreak this monsoon on Monday after at least two has been admitted to Tulashikhar Block Primary Health Center with malaria outbreak. With no learned lesson from the previous episode here in Tripura where as many as villagers of the hilly terrain breathed their lasts effected with malaria germs, the state Left front government had failed to bring the epidemic down yet today. Though of course the number of patients has come down, but the outbreak still prevails in the remote villages of the state.

With another fresh malaria outbreak for the first time, this year at Khowai district of Tripura, at least two including 10 years old Itiram Debbarma and another 35 years old Sonarani Debbarma were admitted to the concerned Tulashikhar Block primary health center on Monday.

Itiram is a resident of Khowai Tulashikhar Block area and another Sonarani Debbarma is a resident of Mungiakami Block of the Khowai District. After they were admitted to the concerned health center on Monday the doctor has collected their blood sample and found the malaria germs. They were admitted to the hospital with high fever. The Tulashikhar Block primary health center doctor Nirija Debbarma said, “After they were admitted to the hospital we have collected their blood sample and later found malaria germs in their blood.” They are now undergoing treatment, said the attending doctor.

Besides, talking to SDM, Khowai Samit Roy Chowdhury said, “We planned to arrange an awareness camp here at the village under the Khowai District which is expected to act as a precautionary measure against the malaria outbreak.” Adding to that he said that this is for the first time that malaria has hit the district this year.

However, it is worthy to mention here that earlier a medical expert team had arrived here at the state to undertake the stock of the situation of malaria epidemic at different villages at Gandacherra. They would stay here in the state for at least two months with an aim to conduct an enquiry to the malaria outbreak. According to the report the expert team are conducting certain tests and examinations to the blood samples of the people affected with malaria this year.

As temperature soars in several water borne diseases has hit the remote areas of the state creating panic among the tribal hamlets and others.

According to the experts since many tribal population do not complete the full course of drugs, malaria become drug resistant and once a mosquito bites them, it can infect others. Many malaria cases are reported even in winter because of this phenomenon.

As May-June is peak season for jhum cultivation the tribals’ are toiling on fields that are swarmed with mosquitoes, the tribals do not wear clothes that fully cover their bodies, hence they are susceptible to mosquito bites.

Earlier, Malaria claimed a heavy toll of 120 lives across the state. Most of them were children. According to a report of the National Vector Borne Disease Control programme (NVBDCP), North-Eastern states excluding Sikkim are highly prone to Malaria. The disease claims over 100 lives in the region every year.
