AGARTALA, May 2 (TIWN): Tripura ready to celebrate Buddha Purnima with full devotion on May 4th. Thousands of devotees will converge at the Venuban monastery here for lighting candles and offering prayers on the auspicious occasion of 2577th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha

This strange, three-fold coincidence, gives Buddha Purnima its unique significance. Lord Buddha through his enlightened teachings showed the eternal path of non-violence, right conduct and universal love. Lord Buddha's teachings have the power to save mankind from ignorance, turmoil and moral decay. Here not only Buddhist but people from other religions also participate for the celebration, showing the enduring welfare of humanity. On this day people of Tripura from different community and religion gather to pray here for peace," he added. On this festival a fair is also held here every year, people enjoyed the fair and did marketing.

Buddha Purnima is the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar. It is celebrated on the full-moon day of Vaisakh (April - May) blessed by the birth, enlightenment and passing away of the Buddha. The time of Gautama Buddha’s birth and death is uncertain. However, most historians date his lifetime between 563-483 B.C. Most people consider Lumbini, Nepal as birth place of Buddha. Buddha died at the age of 80 at Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh.

For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is the most important pilgrimage site related to the life of Gautama Buddha. The other three important pilgrimage sites are Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. It is believed that Gautama Buddha obtained Enlightenment at Bodhagaya and he first taught the Dharma at Sarnath.
